A Formidable Woman: Stories from the life of MA Abolitionist Lucy Stone

Thursday, March 285:30—6:30 PMReference RoomManchester-by-the-Sea Public Library15 Union Street, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA, 01944

Lucy Stone devoted her life to (in her own words) “pleading the cause of the suffering and the outcast.” Where her world told women to be silent and obedient, she was an outspoken activist for freedom and equality for all. She also spoke in a voice that touched and changed even those who opposed her causes. Storyteller Merrill Kohlhofer brings this wonderful and formidable woman to life with these stories using her words and the words of those who loved and were touched by her.

About the Presenter: Merrill Kohlhofer is a minister’s son, originally trained as a preacher but turned professional freelance storyteller and educator, history museum guide and trainer, and now a retired National Park Service historic interpreter. He has been sharing his love of history, and especially of the forgotten stories that shape our country, for over 30 years now. He has told stories in historic sites, museums, conferences and most memorably aboard the schooners Thomas Lannon, Adventure, Ernestina, and the full rigged ship Friendship.
